A centre may cancel your shift if they no longer require your service. We understand it can be frustrating, but here's what to do.
Even though you will receive notifications for any cancellations, it's understandable that you may miss these sometimes. It is important to regularly check the shifts you have accepted as the service's needs may change.
You may encounter this situation when:
- there is low attendance of children due to illness,
- during school holidays when some children may not attend care.
- if 50% of the team is qualified and they no longer require your assistance
It is not uncommon for casual workers to experience sudden cancellations or early dismissals from their shifts.
We recognise that this can be a source of frustration for our employees. However, we want to emphasise that centres will only retain casual staff if they have a genuine need for them.
This is the nature of casual work.
If cancellation occurs, you can always go back to open shifts and accept a new one.
If a centre cancels within 3 hours of your start time, you will be paid for 3 hours (for Diploma, Certificate III Support Worker/Trainee), and you can also accept another shift for that day.
As an ECT, if a centre cancels your shift within 2 hours, you will be paid for 2 hours and will also be able to accept another shift.
Pro tip!
You will be paid the minimum rate if a centre cancels your shift within 3 hours of the shift starting or if they send you home early.
